“Every little thing we do for the sake of our environment can go a long way!” This was the message conveyed by Mr Anders Wester of Tetra Pak (Malaysia) Sdn Bhd at the launch of the recent “Protect the Rainforest” campaign in Tesco Kepong Village Mall.
Jointly organised by Tesco Stores (Malaysia) Sdn Bhd, Nestlé (Malaysia) Berhad and Tetra Pak (Malaysia) Sdn Bhd, the “Protect the Rainforest” campaign is the trio’s community project to enhance the awareness of the Malaysian public about the importance of preserving our natural rainforest, specifically the Belum-Temengor Rainforest through a beverage packet recycling campaign.
Beginning from October 1 to 31, consumers can bring their used beverage packets of all brands, shapes and sizes for recycling to any of the 14 participating Tesco Hypermarkets in Klang Valley in support of the Malaysian Nature Society’s (MNS) efforts to protect Belum-Temengor Rainforest. For every kilo of beverage packets collected, collectively, Tesco Stores, Nestlé Malaysia and Tetra Pak will donate RM10.00 to MNS.
Present to officiate the campaign together with En. Azlam Shah Alias (Government Relations and Legal Affairs Director, Tesco Malaysia), Mr. Peter Vogt (Managing Director of Nestlé Malaysia), Mr. Anders Wester (Managing Director of Tetra Pak Malaysia, Singapore and Philippines) was Dato’ Dr Nadzri Yahaya, who is the Director General of the Department of National Solid Waste Management, Ministry of Housing and Local Government.
According to Nestlé Malaysia’s Managing Director, Peter Vogt, “Good nourishment is an important aspect of living, and just as we nourish our bodies with good food, we should also nourish the health and well-being of our environment through whatever means possible.” Vogt shared that protecting and caring for the environment is a responsibility that all should share and impart to our future generation to ensure treasures such as the Belum-Temengor rainforest remains a heritage for Malaysians to appreciate.
Vogt also explained that Nestlé is giving away free MILO UHT 250ml to consumers who bring in 10 empty Nestlé packets!
According to Wester, the value that this forest holds for posterity is immeasurable; therefore, it is imperative for us to be proactive to preserve and protect it. “As the world’s leading packaging company, the environment is an important element to our business. Therefore, we ensure that materials utilised to create our Tetra Pak packets are sourced from well-managed and certified forests. Recycling our beverage packets is a good practice to ensure we continue to use our natural resources responsibly,” he added.
En Azlam Shah, of Tesco Stores Malaysia echoed Wester’s sentiments and added that he hoped this campaign would encourage a long term recycling habit amongst Malaysians.
“We stock a variety of food and beverage packets. However, many consumers are not aware that these beverage packets can be recycled. We are excited to begin this journey together with Nestlé Malaysia and Tetra Pak as we share a common mission to influence Malaysians to adopt a ‘green’ mindset. We are pleased to be able to incorporate this campaign in our 14 stores and hope this will drive consumers to be more conscious of the environment each time they visit a Tesco store,” expressed Azlam.
At the launch, Dato’ Dr Nadzri shared that he was pleased that organisations like Tesco Stores, Nestlé Malaysia and Tetra Pak are coming together to organise such projects that it syncs well with the government’s efforts to reduce waste output and to effectively manage our waste. This in turn will help reduce the need for more landfills and generate more economic activities in the recycling sector.
On behalf of the Malaysian Nature Society and Belum-Temengor rainforest, Mr Lim Teck Wyn, Honorary Secretary of the Malaysian Nature Society, expressed appreciation to the three leading corporations for selecting them as beneficiary of this cause.
Mr Lim shared that the Belum-Temengor rainforest which is a hilly mountainous region straddling the Main Range of Peninsular Malaysia’s backbone is currently the largest tract of unprotected natural forest and rich in bio-diversity. It is also home to some of Asia’s most treasured flora and fauna including the magnificent hornbill, the Malayan tiger and the Sumatran rhinoceros. Whilst the Royal Belum State Park is legally protected, illegal wildlife hunting and logging threatens its existence and its occupants, be it plants or animals.
The public can also extend their support by signing a conservation pledge for the permanent protection of the Belum-Temengor rainforest which can be made at the booths.
The beverage packets collected from the 14 Tesco Stores will be sent to a local paper mill to be recycled. Paper is just one of the many items that can be produced from recycled beverage packets. Other products include pencil cases, key chains, bookshelves, flower pots and CD holders just to name a few.
