Not everyone is jumping for joy at the thought of the proposed 100-storey Warisan Merdeka Tower. So while the ‘government’ and the ‘rakyat’ battle it out as to whether Malaysia should have its own ‘Empire State Building, let’s take a look at some of the world’s tallest buildings to date.
List of 10 tallest buildings in the world by architectural detail (Opened in 2010):
1. Burj Khalifa (Dubai, United Arab Emirates) --- 828m (2,717 ft.), 160 storeys.
2. Taipei 101 (Taipei, Taiwan) --- 509m (1,671 ft.), 101 storeys.
3. Shanghai World Financial Centre (Shanghai, China) --- 492m (1,614 ft.), 101 storeys.
4. International Commerce Center (Hong Kong) --- 483m (1,584 ft.), 118 storeys.
5. Petronas Tower 1 & 2 (Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia) --- 452m (1,483 ft.), 88 storeys.
6. Nanjing Greenland Financial Center (Nanjing, China) --- 450m (1,476 ft.), 89 storeys.
7. Willis Tower (Chicago, Illinois, USA) --- 442m (1,451 ft.), 108 storeys.
8. Guangzhou West Tower (Guangzhou, China) --- 440m (1,444 ft.), 103 storeys.
9. Jin Mao Building (Shangai, China) --- 421m (1,381 ft.). 88 storeys.
10. Two International Finance Centre (Hong Kong), --- 415m (1,362 ft.), 88 storeys.

• Tallest residential building in the world: Q1 in Gold Coast, Australia --- 275m (902 ft.) to roof; 323m (1,058 ft.) to pinnacle, with 78 storeys.
• Tallest hotel in the world: Rose Tower, Dubai --- 258m (846 ft.) to top floor; 315m (1,033 ft.) to roof; 333m (1,093 ft.) to pinnacle, with 72 storeys.
• Tallest structure in the world: Burj Khalifa, Dubai --- 828m (2,717 ft.).
• First Building to have more than 100 storeys: Empire State Building (New York City, USA) --- 381m (1,250 ft.), 102 storeys. Completed: 1931.
